Hopes annexation of Hawaii will be averted because it would be "a deplorable new departure for the U.S.A." Expresses anxiety over the Herald's position on the Armenian question. [3] 1898, October 11, Forest Row, England, to Richard Watson Gilder [4 p.]. Referring to an "article regarding Colonies." He has postponed writing an article on Bismarck. [4] 1898, December 6, Forest Row, England, to Richard Watson Gilder [4 p.]. Asks him to modify Bryce's "article on Colonies"; "the USA ought ... not to burden itself with tropical dependencies ... We are here in a paroxysm of Jingoism and general glorification of material success." [5] 1899, February 10, to Richard Watson Gilder [3 p.]. Wishes to have date of writing noted when Gilder publishes his article. Suggests acquisition of Philippines by U.S. is beginning of imperialist policy.
